Founded in 1981 by Guilherme Valente, Gradiva is a pioneering publisher of popular science books in Portugal, and for more than four decades has played an important role in promoting science and the scientific spirit.
Gradiva also publishes titles in the areas of philosophy, history, politics and social sciences. It is the publisher of the complete works of António José Saraiva and Eduardo Lourenço, two of the greatest thinkers in Portuguese culture.

Besides the publication of 23 novels by José Rodrigues dos Santos, whose publishing rights have been sold to more than 22 countries, Gradiva publishes some new voices in Portuguese literature, including the winners of the Agustina Bessa-Luís Revelation Literary Prize.
